Details
Come join the Mercury Bay Museum for their national speaker roadshow leading up to the transit of Mercury across the sun!
Hear astronomy-based talks from Dr Rangi Matamua, Dr Nicholas Rattenbury, Dr Karen Pollard, and Dr Emma Bunce and, with help from the Otago Museum science communicators, get a chance to safely look at the sun through a solar telescope.
This is a free event- doors open at 5.30, talk starts at 6.
See more information on the Mercury Rising Project website.
This event is part of the Tuia 250 Encounters programme.
On the 9th of November 1769 Captain James Cook and Astronomer Charles Green observed the transit of Mercury across the Sun from Te Whanganui o Hei without sharing the excitement with the Maori. A lot has changed in Aotearoa in the last 250 years.
The Otago Museum, along with Tuia 250 and the Mercury Bay Museum, hope to bring people together this transit, to learn from each other’s astronomical expertise, and to watch the last transit of Mercury visible in New Zealand until 2269.
