GRAHAME CHRISTIAN WITHDRAWS FROM COUNCIL BID

Written by on September 16, 2022

Grahame Christian has today announced that he is no longer seeking a position on Council. He was a candidate for the Mercury Bay Ward of Thames Coromandel District Council. Earlier today he issued the following statement on the Whiti Chit Chat Facebook Group.

“For personal reasons I have decided to withdraw my nomination as a councillor for the Mercury Bay Ward. The process does not allow your name to be removed from the list, so this is an update in the hope that votes may not be wasted and other candidates affected. I wish the remaining candidates well. Grahame Christian”.

Grahame has agreed to an interview on Coromandel’s CFM on Monday 19 September at around 8:20am where he will talk to Jason Myatt and John Grant about why he has made the decision and the reasons behind his withdrawal.

Grahame is the founder and a director of Smart Environmental who currently hold the TCDC contract for waste management services on the Coromandel. Yesterday TCDC announced the decision of the awarding of the Waste Management contract to Chinese company Waste Management NZ Ltd and you can read about that here.  Grahame has also been very active in the community supporting and mentoring a number of local businesses as well as a mentor at MBAS. Outside of the waste management sector he has a background in Aquaculture and Fisheries, National Sport – Player, Coach and Board Member. He was Chair of Preserve New Chum, and spent 11 years in the NZ Police, where he was awarded the Commissioners Bravery Medal. His Iwi is Ngati Huarere ki Whangapoua and was Chair of Waitangi Tribunal Wai 475 claim. There is little doubt that his courage, experience and ethics will be missed at TCDC.

Mercury Bay Community are going to be missing out on the huge contribution that Grahame Christian had to bring as an excellent candidate for our Council representation as he has and still does so much with generous contribution with his time and expertise to help many. He has strong skills of integrity and honesty which are strongly required in a Councillors position!
