The new outdoor recreation centre targeting teenage children will open at Port Charles in the first week of March.

Confirmation this week from Hillary Outdoors that work on their latest facility, with a marine and conservation focus, is on track following the conversion of the former Tangiaro Kiwi Retreat at the entrance to the northern Coromandel Peninsula community.

With the conversion has come the backing and support from the local community, the centre manager, Hayden Devine, telling us that already several organisations were working together on joint projects.

The purchase of the 340-hectare site by Hillary Outdoors comes with the responsibility for 242 hectares which is protected by the QEII National Trust. Across that land is one of the highest populations of kiwi birds on private land.

Hillary Outdoors is the country’s leading provider of youth outdoor education experiences. The Port Charles site will back-up the Tongariro National Park facility. The organisation provides more than 40,000 education experiences annually.
