Iconic Giant 1200 Year Old Kauri Has Dieback

One of the oldest and most iconic kauri trees on the Coromandel Peninsula has dieback disease and is slowly dying.

The 1200 year old giant at the Long Bay Kauri Walk near Coromandel Town is being treated for the disease which may prolong its life.

Waikato Regional Council’s, Patrick Whaley, described confirmation of the disease in the tree as incredibly disappointing. Patrick said the Peninsula had relatively few recorded cases of kauri disease, and none as publicly accessible as the Long Bay Kauri Walk.

Rob Holding spoke with Damion Embling, who is the council’s Biosecurity Team Leader about the situation.
