Rescue Chief Makes Plea To Coastline Users

Written by on May 7, 2023

A plea on the back of a dramatic coastline rock rescue at Whiritoa Beach on Saturday night.

The local volunteer acting fire chief Errol Smith wants those heading to the coast to fish to have a discussion first so they understand conditions and what they will potentially experience.

The Westpac Rescue helicopter was required along with rescue staff from both Whiritoa and Waihi to extract an injured fisherman off rocks ahead on an advancing tide.

Volunteer firemen then had to be assisted out by an abseiling Waihi back-up crew – as the helicopter could not get back to the scene.
