A major slip which is being described as having the appearance of being hit by a major earthquake, has closed indefinitely SH25A – the Kopu Hikuai Road.

Both Waka Kotahi and Thames Coromandel District Council confirmed today that the area of highway which had previously developed cracking, has now suffered a major failure.

Closure of the road will have a major impact on the Coromandel Peninsula being the main east west transport corridor. Also closed are two other east west links being the Tapu Coroglen and 309 Roads.

The cracks opened in the last storm event resulting in the road being reduced to a single lane while seiemic testing was conducted.

The area concerned is on the western passing lane near the highway summit. Even emergency vehicles have been restricted from using the road

Garry said the road closure will have a significant impact on the local economy.
