Kopu’s new Marine Precinct is now open, Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters today undertaking the honour.

The $15.3 million facility which is estimated to generate a $60 million economic benefit over the next 30 years, provides new boat launching facilities on the Waihou River for boat commercial and recreational users.

While undertaking the opening Winston could not help but fire a shot at national media in their lack of representation at what he said was a good news story.

He described the new marine precinct as the kind of infrastructure investment required “to help get the region’s mojo back” and return Coromandel back to what it once was – a world leading region.

Minister for Regional Development and Fisheries, Hon Shane Jones, said he looked forward to the region pushing open more doors with more good ideas.

Thames Community Board chairman Adrian Catran said having both the deputy prime minister and his colleague Shane Jones visit the town was significant as was the opening.
