New Whitianga transfer station opens its gates on 10 November

Whitianga’s new Refuse and Recycling Transfer Station was officially opened today, with Mayor Peter Revell and Group Manager Infrastructure Mo Imtiaz unveiling a plaque at the 48 Moewai Road site.

The new facility replaces the old transfer station on South Highway West, which had been outgrown as Mercury Bay’s population increased.

It opens to the public on Tuesday 10 November. The existing transfer station will close for one day on Monday 9 November so equipment and operations can move across. The new site will open at 10.30am on the Tuesday, then run its usual hours of 8.30am to 5.30pm from Wednesday 11 November.

The project was funded through the 2024 to 2034 Long Term Plan with a budget of $11.5 million. Up to $5.9 million came from the Government’s Waste Minimisation Fund, cutting the cost to ratepayers.

The site has dedicated entry and exit weighbridges, an enclosed refuse drop off area, separate areas for recyclables and recoverable materials, and better traffic flow.

“This is a significant milestone for Whitianga and Mercury Bay,” Mayor Revell said. “It’s an investment in the future of Mercury Bay and something our community can be proud of.”
