Meet local artists, see where they work, and buy your own piece directly from its maker during Mercury Bay Art Escape’s Open Studios. Fifty talented artists are opening their doors to the public during the first two weekends of March. So, grab your friends and start planning an art-filled road trip around the eastern Coromandel peninsula.
Artists include flax weavers, furniture makers, jewellers, glass and mosaic artists, painters, photographers, potters, printmakers, sculptors, and woodworkers.
The Open Studios are a free event and a fabulous opportunity to explore our scenic backyard, with artists based in and around Tairua, Coroglen, Whenuakite, Hot Water Beach, Hahei, Cooks Beach, Whitianga, Opito Bay, Kuaotunu and Rings Beach.
The 2021 Mercury Bay Art Escape season kicks off with The Gala Opening at Hot Waves Cafe, Hot Water Beach on Friday, March 5 at 6pm. The guest speaker is renowned sculptural cast glass artist Di Tocker. Tickets are $45 and include hors d’oeuvres, a glass of wine, live music and early access to work for sale. The Open Studios run the weekends of March 6 & 7 and March 13 & 14, from 10-4.
The Showcase Exhibition starts March 6 at Hot Waves Cafe, displaying a piece from each artist. That’s until Easter Monday, April 5.
