Deer Hunt As Animals Back On The Peninsula
Written by John Freer on March 4, 2026
For the first time in 30 years deer have been sited on the southern Coromandel Peninsula, now assistance is being called for to eradicate the animals.
The most recent sightings were in the Nevesville area south of the Kopu-Hikuai Road, and Golden Cross north of Waihi. The numbers or sizes of herds remain unknown, the Department of Conservation’s Regional Director, Tinaka Mearns, is hoping public feedback may assist with this.
She has asked for farmers, residents and visitors who see deer to notify DOC. Tinaka said advice was also being sought on how the deer got into the area, she said they were present further south in the Kaimai Range but at this stage there was no information how they were being found north of the Ohinemuri River. DOC is implementing a two-stage plan.
