Get prepared to stay safe – this is the advice today from the Thames Coromandel Civil Defence team as the remnants of Cyclone Lola are being felt.

After activating the emergency management office, Controller Gary Towler, told CFM the storm structure had changed in that the winds were now expected to be slightly stronger than originally predicted, the rain slightly less.

Power outages, flooding and wind damage, including possible fires, are on the radar screens of those monitoring the situation. With king tides, coastal impacts can be expected.

Already two schools have announced they will be closed tomorrow being Mercury Bay Area School and Whenuakite School. The Thames Coromandel rubbish collection has been cancelled, residents being asked to put any bins away that may have already been left outside properties – this to prevent them becoming missiles.

Gary is asking everyone to check the weather and road conditions tomorrow morning (Monday) before venturing out.
