Mixed Reaction to Marine Protection Advice

With the introduction of 19 new marine protection areas now in place around the Hauraki Gulf and Coromandel Peninsula, a mixed response from recreational fishermen who have interacted with the Department of Conservation staff.
Over the summer period, DOC has had staff in place as part of an education programme on the new areas. Principal Marine Ranger, Adam Whatton has told CFM that while the responses have been mixed, this had changed once people understood the details of what was trying to be achieved.
