Three Saved As Life-savers Prepared to End Their Patrol
Written by John Freer on January 7, 2026
Yesterday’s rescue on Tairua Beach resulted from a man getting into difficulties, while trying to rescue another person.
Three people ended up requiring the assistance from both Tairua and Pauanui Life Savers who raced to the scene.
A 20-year-old man was flown to Thames Hospital in a serious condition by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter, the other two people were treated by ambulance staff at the scene.
The events unfolded as local life guards were wrapping up for the day and preparing to head home and as Chaz Gibbons-Campbell – the regional surf life-saving manager, told us if the call had come 10 minutes later it could have been a very different outcome.
CFM has an interview with Chaz, click on the link to hear it.
