The Whangamata Surf Life Saving Club, a community cornerstone since 1949, celebrated the grand reopening of its refurbished building this weekend.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony brought together lifeguards, locals, and supporters to mark the completion of a vital renovation, ensuring the club remains a hub for lifesaving and community spirit.
The project, launched in 2020-2021 to address low seismic ratings and structural issues, upgraded foundations, drainage, electrical systems, and HVAC. Funding came from Surf Life Saving New Zealand (50%), the Crown’s capital fund, Waikato, lotteries grants, and generous local donations. Brian Black led the effort, with club manager Dianne (Dide) Harrison overseeing operations.
Club president Gavin Scott spoke passionately about the club’s mission. “Our goal is no drownings on New Zealand beaches,” he said, noting Whangamata’s status as the country’s busiest beach during peak periods, with 20 volunteer lifeguards. One of 80 clubs nationwide, it excels in lifesaving and sports, fostering “great New Zealanders” through leadership and volunteerism. “Join as an associate member to help with tasks like shelving or support us via our digital billboard,” Scott urged.
Chris Emmett from Surf Life Saving New Zealand praised the teamwork. “Support from central and local government, plus the build committee, has been brilliant,” he said, celebrating the community’s role in the club’s revival.
Club captain Grace Westenberg shared her personal connection. “The friendships and learning here have shaped me,” she said. “This club grows great people and gives young Kiwis chances to lead and contribute.”
The ceremony ended with a ribbon-cutting, symbolising a fresh chapter. Part of the Williamson family bequest on trust land, the club serves a diverse membership, including Auckland and Waikato locals, and offers an accommodation block for lifeguards. Future plans include more community events and new memberships.
