Ferryman Urges Public Support To Achieve Service Viability and Growth
Written by John Freer on September 3, 2025
It was a good day yesterday for Coromandel Peninsula residents who have patiently waited for an Auckland ferry service to be reinstated.
Work involving several organisations came to fruition with the Explore Group announcing the revival of the passenger water link between Coromandel Town and downtown Auckland. Managing director of Explore, William Goodfellow, indicated it was now up to the public to ensure the viability of the service.
The two-hour trip will be in operation for Labour Weekend and then run Friday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons. It will be a passenger only service operated by the company’s fleet of fast catamaran ferries, leaving Auckland in the afternoon for the run to the peninsula.
The Coromandel Colville Business Association, Destination Hauraki Coromandel and the Thames Coromandel District Council yesterday all sang the praises of the new service based on the potential for tourists and visitors, plus for locals seeking an alternative route to Auckland.
