Caution from Shorebird Centre Boss Over Bird Flu
Written by John Freer on July 16, 2026
The arrival of Avian Bird Flu in New Zealand is very top of mind for those involved with the Pukorokoro Miranda Shorebird Centre on the Western Firth of Thames.
Centre manager Keith Woodley yesterday provided an update on the potential impact on the local region. Keith said the migratory birds were not expected until September and it was extremely unlikely they would carry the virus.
To him it was more the turns and gulls which were at risk. Precautions are being taken at Miranda.
