Summer Weather Risk Means Prepare Now

With the El Nino weather pattern stalking the region, local emergency management services are gearing up for a long hot summer.

As a result land and property owners are being encouraged to take action now to lower the risk associated with wild fires and potential pressure on water supplies.

Thames Coromandel Emergency Management Controller, Brian Carter, told CFM that all emergency services were aware of what is being predicted, and are developing responses.

On the matter of the risk due to El Nino, Brian told us the coming summer posed a higher risk than normal due to the westerly winds and higher temperatures.

In managing the threat of fires Brian said Fire and Emergency New Zealand were fully engaged and aware of the concerns of those living across the district.

He said an education programme is planned, but in the meantime, he encouraged residents to identify areas which could become an issue in the likes of wild fires while also engaging with one of the 36 local community response groups across the Peninsula.
