Annual Rainfall Achieved In May

The Coromandel Peninsula has this year achieved its annual rainfall in four and a half months.
This today after yesterday’s deluge which has again impacted on roads and property across the entire Peninsula and Hauraki Plains.
As of today, you get an appreciation of why the region is suffering. We have had just over 3.5 meters of rain – a number we don’t normally achieve until December 31.
The latest dumping has left several roads closed, described as the normal areas, State High 2 between Paeroa and Waihi was hit twice, one being a large tree which blocked the highway. It is back to one-lane under traffic management.
Civil Defence Controller, Gary Towler, said unfortunately the picture was not going to improve, agreeing that the region is just going to have to hunker down and work together to get through the coming winter.
He urged people to take care when driving saying you simply do not know what is around the next corner.
