Deep sea fishing was popular out of Mercury Bay.
A celebrity of the 1920’s was Mr. Zane Grey, a well-known writer of Western novels and an internationally famous angler. He visited Mercury Bay to enjoy the deep sea fishing.
His first visit was in 1929 when he camped on Great Mercury Island. He brought with him two game-fish boats equipped with the very latest gear.
Mr. Chadban who landed the first sword fish ever caught in New Zealand was responsible for forming the Mercury Bay Game Fish Club in 1925. Marlin Street in Whitianga is named for the highly sought-after game fish.
