A Tairua fisherman left Tairua on his 40ft launch to do some game fishing had logged his trip with Coastguard and expected to spend at least a day enjoying great fishing conditions, instead just after hooking a marlin, he fell into the water and had to watch while his launch that was in gear and idling left him in a precarious position at sea with no other boats in near vicinity.

It was nearly 24 hours later that he was able to use his watch to reflect the sun that attracted the attention of another boat out fishing. Those on board saw the reflection and thought they would go and investigate the source.

Max White from Auckland was one of those aboard the boat that found the Tairua fisherman and he tells John Freer from Coromandel CFM News that they did not expect to find someone floating in the water.
