Survey – Part 4: availability and use of drugs in our community

Here is today’s part 4 segment on attitudes to the supply and use of drugs in the Coromandel and surrounding districts. If you want to review the first three segments, they are available here on our website.

Today we look at the responses to the following question:

How concerned are you regarding the supply and availability and use of drugs in our community?

No surprisingly there was universal concern for this with 89% of all respondents very concerned and a further 9% concerned but not seeing the supply and availability and use of drugs in the community as a major concern. Only 2% where not at all concerned.

By gender the results were similar with females outnumbering males in the very concerned area with 90% compared to males at 82%. Those who answered yes to concerned but not seeing it as a major issue were higher with males at 12% compared to females at 7%, however this is the result of the above data that shows females overall were more concerned than males.

Locations varied slightly, with Thames including coastal communities to Manaia leading the concern stakes at 94% closely followed by Coromandel Town including coastal areas north of Manaia to Waitete Bay at 93%. Others were as follows.

• Whangamata including Oputere, Onemana, and Whiritoa at 89% very concerned.
• Whitianga including Kuaotunu, Matarangi, Whangapoua, Opito and Otama, Cooks Beach, Hahei and Hot Water Beach at 88%.
• Paeroa/Te Aroha or other Hauraki provincial town at 75%.
• Tairua/Pauanui including Hikuai at 73% very concerned.
