A large search along the Thames Coast between Tapu and Wilsons Bay today failed to find a missing kayaker fisherman. Police have confirmed the person they are searching for is a 25-year-old man from Waihi.

He went missing on Monday after loosing a paddle when fishing with a friend north of the Waikawau Boat Ramp. Police Search and Rescue staff, Coastguard, LandSAR, and several volunteer teams are continuing to search the coastline – Police drones and helicopters are also being used.

Waikato East Prevention Manager, Acting Senior Sergeant Dale Colmore-Williams, said the missing fisherman was wearing black and white basketball shorts, a grey hoodie and a black beanie.

Anyone that comes across anything of interest in the area is urged to contact Police. Information can be provided on 105 referencing file number 230912/1041.

Police would like to thank all of the volunteers who have given their time and the local community for their support during the search.
