COROMANDEL COVID UPDATE – Sunday afternoon 22 August

Coromandel and surrounds, you can take a collective sigh of relief. Another twenty-four hours has passed and it is increasingly looking like we have dodged a bullet or in this case, dodged Delta.
Auckland on the other hand has another 20 cases and Wellington a further one, brining the collective total to 72 current Covid cases. Included in the 20 new cases in Auckland were several linked to a church service at the Samoan Assembly of God church in Mangere last Sunday. People who attended the church are being asked to call Healthline.
It demonstrates how fickle Delta can be with cases from this gathering while we have seen no cases so far, from the full to capacity Saturday night function where Case A attended along with a capacity crowd watching rugby at Star and Garter Hotel, Coromandel Town.
Also good news for Coromandel and surrounding districts was the wastewater testing, showing positive traces in Auckland and Wellington, but not in other areas which would include the Coromandel.
Also announced today by Minister Hipkins was the Government decision that record keeping like scanning with the Covid-app or manually signing in on entry will be mandatory across most events and businesses in the future. More detail on this will be released shortly.
There was also a continuation of the hints that Auckland will almost certainly continue in Level 4 lockdown and some other areas may be lowered in alert levels or at least given an indication of when things could be relaxed. This will be announced after tomorrows Cabinet meeting. The update with announcements now scheduled for 3pm instead of the usual 1pm tomorrow.

This isn’t the time to be encouraging communities to breathe a sigh of relief. It’s a time to remind people to be responsible, stay home, get tested if they feel unwell. Encouraging people to relax – even if meant to reassure the audience – feels irresponsible. The headline should be “we are not out of the woods yet”.
