The future of Oceana Gold mining activities will be determined by the approval of the Waihi North Project, which according to the company, has been enhanced by the Government’s new minerals strategy.
Resources Minister, Shane Jones, launched the Minerals Strategy for New Zealand and Critical Minerals List at Oceana Gold’s Waihi Mine.
Senior vice-president, Alison Paul, used the function to draw a connection between the strategy and the company’s proposed Waihi North or Wharekirauponga Underground Mine.
The mine is to be located beneath the Department of Conservation Forest Park, all access and mining will be underground.
Alison told those attending the launch, that the strategy provided certainty to the mining industry to continue investment in New Zealand.
She expanded at length how Oceana Gold proposed to work the Wharekirauponga Mine and the extent the company would invest in partnerships with appropriate stakeholders through both mining operations and conservation activities.
The speech also used examples such as Reefton where mining had moved on, but left an appropriate legacy.
