Tairua has an inaugural business association. This from a meeting last night attended by representatives of more than 20 of the town’s businesses.

Spokesman Peter Hunt said while the current reduced trading was one reason for the association being established, it was not the only reason.

Peter said there was the anticipated doom and gloom associated with the likes of State Highway 25A being closed, citing today where he had two people in his shop, while another person had three or four customers.

But he said the gloom was replaced with a very positive reaction to what were seen as the long-term opportunities.

The association will be formally structured as an incorporated society. The new committee meets later this week.

First job for the association will be to work with Enterprise Whangamata to determine how recovery funds provided by council can be utilised.
